Collapsible Dog Crate (Stock photo)

Traveling with Pets Made Easy

Midwest Canine Camper ($99.99 to 129.99) is a collapsible dog crate that comes in a variety of sizes (though for some the smallest ones, you may have to search around the internet for the right etailer) that really makes life convenient.  We picked up one just like this at a local pet supplies store two years ago, and it was one of the best uses of $100 we’ve spent when it comes to Mellan.  If you do any kind of traveling and have a dog that’s outgrown its must-chew phase, a soft, foldable or collapsible crate is a must!

It takes less than five minutes to assemble, and it’s durable enough to be carted around, scratched at, and gently nibbled on.  If you have a dog that’s going to go to town on it, I’d recommend going for a foldable metal cage rather than this soft crate, though–a very determined chewer could probably get through the fabric.  There are side pockets for storing various dog-related travel accessories, as well as roll-up shades on each side of the “house.”

We routinely travel between my parents’ and my boyfriend’s parents’, and this fits easily in a trunk without taking up much space at all (maybe 1.5″ thick, and then the width and height of the largest side).  The large size fits Mellan, a yellow labrador, perfectly–but heads up, he is on the smaller side for a lab.  It’s large enough to fit his bed in it, too, so we can make it extra comfy on longer trips when bringing his bed makes sense (he can sleep on the floor for a night, we think!).
